From security and chemical expert to Pope: the trajectory of the Argentine pontiff
Tango lover, I used to go out to dance with a youth girlfriend. There are reports that Bergoglio wrote many love letters to the young woman, but there are no official records.
He joined the Diocesian Seminary of Villa Devoto in 1958. In the same year, he joined the novitiate of the Society of Jesus, and lived and studied in Chile until 1963. Back in Buenos Aires, Bergoglio obtained his degree in Philosophy at the São José College in San Miguel.
Between 1964 and 1966 he was a teacher of literature and psychology. He taught in the Immaculate Colleges in Santa Fe, and the Savior in Buenos Aires. Already in 1967 he started to study theology at the College of São José, where he graduated in 1970.
In 1969, he was ordained a priest in Argentina, and in 1973 he was elected provincial of the Jesuits. In the early 1980s, he returned to the university field and, for six years, was a rector of the São José College. In 1986, he spent a period in Germany to complete his doctorate.
