The Minister of Institutional Relations, Gleisi Hoffmann, criticized supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro on Sunday who exhibited US flags during demonstrations in defense of amnesty to the former Mandanker.

“This is our difference with the pockets: we contained the Brazilian flag. We exalted the Brazilian flag, from the Brazilian people,” wrote the minister in publication on social networks.

The criticisms occurred on the same day as President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva participated in the September 7 parade in Brasilia, marked by the emphasis on national sovereignty. This year, the Ministries Esplanade was decorated with the slogan “Brazil Sovereign”, and the government sought to reinforce the image of independence from the tariff imposed by the United States government.

While Lula exalted national sovereignty on a stage alongside ministers and allies, the Bolsonarist opposition went to the streets to pass the approval of an amnesty bill that could benefit Bolsonaro and others investigated by the acts of January 8, 2023. According to Cebrap’s monitoring, the demonstration on Paulista Avenue gathered about 42,200 people, while in Copacabana, Rio, another Follower mobilized. 42 thousand participants.

Already the acts summoned from the left, in São Paulo and Rio, gathered approximately 8,800 and 4 thousand people, respectively. In these mobilizations, political and trade union leaders stressed the need to bar the amnesty and reinforced the alignment with the government’s narrative about Brazil’s defense against external pressures.

Deputy Lindbergh Farias (PT) criticized this Sunday the attitude of the governor of São Paulo, Tarcisio de Freitas (Republicans), during pockets on Paulista Avenue. According to Farias, the governor’s speech represented “a frontal attack on the Supreme Court (STF)” and an attempt to press the court at the trial of Jair Bolsonaro and others involved in the scammers of January 8, 2023.

“Tarcisio does not act as governor, but as Bolsonaro’s lawyer. Who attacks ministers and defends amnesty to conspirators does not fight for freedom: legitimizes crime, sabotes justice and paves the way for new attacks against democracy,” wrote the deputy on his social networks.

Protest in Paulista

During an act on Paulista Avenue, the governor of Sao Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, defended the amnesty grant to Jair Bolsonaro and criticized what he called the “tyranny” of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF. While the governor spoke, protesters shouted “out, Moraes.”

“Why are you screaming this? Maybe because no one can handle it anymore. No one can handle the tyranny of a minister like Moraes. No one can handle what is happening in this country,” replied Tarcisio.

The governor questioned the validity of the evidence presented against Bolsonaro and allies in the process of the acts of January 8, 2023 and called the “liar” of Mauro Cid, former Bolsonaro orders that collaborated with the investigations.

“They try to create a narrative that January 8 was an attempt to coup. All lawyers said they could not make the defense. Does this give us a fair trial? There is no document, there is no order. How will I condemn a person without any proof? If we are here today defending amnesty, this amnesty has to be wide,” he said.
