Gonet defends Bolsonaro’s trial in the STF
The Attorney General, Paulo Gonet, defended on Saturday, 12, at an event in the United States, that the Supreme Court (STF) is the right instance to judge former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) for the alleged crimes committed by the executive.
“When it comes to something of great magnitude, it doesn’t matter that the mandate is over or not, the president must respond for what he has done during his term and do it before the highest court in the country. I think we are living this moment,” said the prosecutor when asked about what limits guarantee that not even the country’s authorities are above the law.
Alongside the director-general of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues, Gonet participated in a panel of the 11th edition of Brazil Conference, held at Harvard by the institution of Brazilian students of the institution in the United States.

In addition to defending Bolsonaro’s trial in the Supreme Court, Gonet said there is a consideration between the needs of a president “presenting his reasons with credibility” and the need for justice to make mistakes of executive members responsible.
“What exists there is a consideration between the needs of a head of government, a strong head of state and able to discuss, to present their reasons with credibility, and the need for all to be effectively responsible for what he has done wrong,” said the Attorney General.
Throughout the process of the alleged coup attempt, Bolsonaro’s defense tried to take the case of the Supreme Court and transfer to the Federal Court claiming that on January 8, 2023, he was no longer president and would no longer be entitled to privileged forum.
However, in March this year, the Supreme expanded the range of the privileged forum and expanded the competence of the Court to judge crimes of politicians and authorities who are no longer in office. In one of the refusals to the argument of Bolsonaro’s defense, Gonet even mentioned the change in jurisprudence.
“The fixed thesis-which had had the vote of most court ministers since last year-has surpassed the allegation of incompetence brought by the accused,” argues the attorney general.
