Greenland in Trump’s sights: how plan could make Ozempic and Lego more expensive
Novo Nordisk still produces part of its weight loss medications in the USA. It is uncertain whether this situation would continue in the face of a commercial or even military war between the USA and Denmark. A spokesperson for the laboratory told the American newspaper that the company follows the facts, but does not comment on assumptions and speculation.
Denmark is also the leading supplier of hearing aids to the US. Medical instruments, pork, local fish fillets, coal tar oil (used to make medicines and industrial products), petroleum and baked delicacies are other main products sent by the Danes to the Americans, according to the Observatory.
Legos that enter the US are manufactured not only in their Danish headquarters, but also in Mexico, Hungary, the Czech Republic, China, Vietnam and in a company factory in the US state of Virginia. Therefore, it is more uncertain how the tariff impact would be on products from the largest toy manufacturer in the world.
A spokesperson for the European Commission classified Trump’s threats as “hypothetical” but said European countries had prepared for all possible consequences of a Trump presidency on trade between the US and the European Union. Jacob Funk Kierkegaard, senior researcher at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Brussels (considered the “capital of the EU” as it houses the headquarters of the European Council, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission, as well as the secondary headquarters of the European Parliament), stated that if Trump goes ahead with the taxation against Denmark, he should expect a response from the entire EU.
This idea that he can pressure Denmark as a single EU member state to offer policy concessions by threatening tariffs will invite retaliation from across the European Union. Jacob Funk Kierkegaard, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, told the Times.
