Group of Brazilians gather to harass Lula in NY
A group of about 20 Brazilian opponents mobilized to harass President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on his arrival in New York on Sunday (21). They shouted words of support to President Donald Trump and offenses to Lula and the first lady Rosângela da Silva, Janja, until the United States Secret Service, responsible for the security of the UN delegations, pushed them away.
The protesters approached a few meters from the residence of the permanent representative of Brazil in the United Nations. The head of security at the site, an American, ordered Brazilian and Americans agents to remove the group with railings up to about 35 meters from the entrance of the scene. He said the measure was to ensure the president’s safe arrival and move risks away, as traffic was not interrupted.

The group wore shirts from Brazil and former President Jair Bolsonaro and carried national flags. They shouted “Lula Thief” and “Lula Ladrão” and asked Brazil to hear Trump. Three Lula supporters shouted words in response, saying that Brazil is sovereign. They were moved to the opposite side of the sidewalk.
The presidential plane landed at JFK International Airport at 17:57 (US time). Lula is accompanied by a leaner than usual entourage with four ministers of state.
Lula and Janja will stay at the official residence of Brazil, where he lives the permanent representative of Brazil before the UN, ambassador Sérgio Danese. This is Lula’s first trip to the United States at the height of the crisis with Donald Trump government. He is not expected to meet with Trump to discuss tariff and political differences.
