Haddad does not confirm whether he is staying at the Farm and says he has already handed over everything to Lula

The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, did not confirm whether he will remain in charge of the department until the end of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s current term, which ends at the end of 2026. In an interview with Estadão, Haddad said that he has already delivered to Lula everything that was ordered by the president.

Asked whether he will be at the Ministry of Finance in May 2026 – the deadline for disqualifying the position of minister to contest next year’s elections is April –, Haddad replied that he doesn’t know. “I haven’t spoken to him (Lula) yet.”

“I already said that I delivered everything he ordered. What he ordered, I delivered,” Haddad told Estadão.

The minister, however, said that he has no intention of being a candidate in 2026 and, according to him, the president has known this since last year.

Haddad was also asked if he would continue as Finance Minister in a possible fourth Lula term and again replied without certainty: “I don’t know if I have that intention, we’ll see.”

Relationship with PT and the market

In a good moment with the financial market, Haddad said he does not believe that his eventual departure from the government will cause turbulence. “I think that the challenge of incorporating this (economic) agenda has been overcome,” he stated.

Approved by the market, Haddad was beaten by his own party at various times since the beginning of his term. “The PT improved with me”, said the minister. But he softened: “although he was always nice to me.”

Free transport

In the interview, Haddad also spoke about some priority topics at the Farm. One of them is the possibility of exemption from fares on municipal buses. For now, according to the minister, it is just a feasibility study.

“The president asked me to study the sector. I don’t have a proposal, we are doing an x-ray”, he explained, saying that nothing should be implemented in 2026. “(The free tariff) will only be viable if it is fiscally neutral. If not, we won’t do it. I don’t have the fiscal space for that”, he added.
