Half of Brazilians believe that Trump's trade policy harms Brazil

After three months of the government of President Donald Trump in the United States, 50% of Brazilians consider that their trade policies are damaging the Brazilian economy, according to an ipsos-Ipec survey released on Friday, 18.

Already those who believe that the decisions of the Republican are not negatively affecting Brazil and those who do not know or do not respond are tied, with 25% each.

Still in the economic perspective, the perception that management is harmful to Brazil is even greater among those who voted for President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in 2022 (58%), although among former President Jair Bolsonaro voters the perception also corresponds to the relative majority, with 43%.

2 thousand people were interviewed 16 years or older, in 131 Brazilian municipalities and between April 3 and 7. The margin of error is 2 points for more or less, and 95%confidence level.

Earlier this month, Trump announced a tariff for 185 countries, including Brazil. The president set a 10% level as a higher base and rates for specific nations. However, several international authorities reacted to politics and, days after the initial announcement, Trump decided to limit his 10% reciprocal tariffs for a period of 90 days except China.

Trump’s performance

The research also identified Brazilians’ perception of US government’s performance in general, not just in relation to trade policies. The evaluation for 49% of respondents is that the Trump government entry is negative for Brazil, while 29% see as positive and 2%, it is indifferent.

Regarding how Brazilians evaluate Donald Trump’s management to the Americans themselves, the survey shows that 21% of respondents think the “bad” republican government, 19% as “good” and for 19%, is “regular”.
