Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that this would be a “very difficult day” for Israel. He expressed the feeling of mourning and disturbance of the country in the face of the situation.
Hundreds of people gathered in Khan Younis before the bodies were delivered. Hamas militants patrolled the area while the coffins were prepared for transfer.
The Bibas family was kidnapped in the agricultural community of Nir Oz. Shiri’s husband, Yarden Bibas, was previously released later this month.
Shiri Bibas and his children became symbols of the trauma of the attack. According to Yiftach Cohen, resident of Nir Oz, the community lost about a quarter of the inhabitants between dead and kidnapped in the attack.
Hamas claimed that the deaths occurred due to an Israeli air strike. However, the Israeli authorities have not confirmed this version and will perform DNA tests in the bodies.
A poster displayed on site suggested that the land belongs to the Palestinians. The image showed a man on coffins with Israeli flags and roots in place of the legs, with the message “The Return of War = The Return of Your Prisoners in Persons.”
