Health benefits are lost after suspension of Mounjaro
Lifestyle change is important
The active ingredient in Mounjaro, tirzepatide, can help people lose an average of 20% of their body weight in 72 weeks of treatment – more than other similar treatments available, such as Wegovy and Ozempic. However, other research has found that the weight lost generally tends to be regained a few months after stopping the medication – at a much faster rate than in the case of people who lose weight only through diet, exercise and lifestyle changes.
The authors of the study published this Monday state that the conclusions “reinforce the importance of maintaining long-term weight reduction through lifestyle interventions and obesity management medications, in order to maintain cardiometabolic benefits and a better quality of life.”
To the British newspaper The Guardian, Jane Ogden, professor emeritus at the school of health sciences at the University of Surrey, highlighted that the use of injectable medications for weight loss is not always accompanied by changes in lifestyle and diet. According to her, maintaining old habits that are harmful to health can lead to weight gain and, consequently, the reversal of cardiac benefits. Another study recently published in the journal Nature shows that the use of tirzepatide can calm the incessant desire for food, but only temporarily.
