Heavy rain interrupts bus circulation and postpones university entrance exams in Santa Catarina
The rains that hit the southern region of the country put cities in Santa Catarina on alert this Saturday (7). The intense rain in almost every state caused flooding, flash floods and floods in several regions.
The municipality of Joinville, the most populous in the state, experienced flooding, leaving many neighborhoods flooded. In the last 12 hours, 120 millimeters were recorded across the region. The intense rain led the city hall to interrupt the circulation of buses this Saturday (7) — there is still no forecast for the return of public transport, which, according to the city hall, will be stopped until “there is operational security to resume operations”.
In addition, the entrance exam for the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) also had its schedule postponed in the municipality. According to a note released by the institution, the other cities, with their respective test locations, continue with the time stipulated in the notice.
Other municipalities in Santa Catarina, such as Xanxerê and Dionísio Cerqueira, also faced occasional flooding, according to the state government.
The meteorological instability is caused by a semi-stationary cold front, which maintains the forecast of intense rains until Monday (9), with high risks of landslides and flooding.
According to the state Secretariat for Protection and Civil Defense, accumulated rainfall should vary between 200mm and 250mm in the most affected regions, such as the Far West, North Coast, Planalto Norte and Vale do Itajaí, which represents a high risk for landslides and floods.
On the South Coast and Greater Florianópolis, the expected volumes are lower, between 60mm and 80mm, with occasional peaks of up to 100mm, resulting in a moderate risk for flooding and landslides.
