‘Impure’: Walking with dogs in Iran is now a crime in at least 20 cities
“Legal Measures” will be taken against those who violate the new rules. This is what the authorities of the city of Ilam announced, where the ban came into force on Sunday. Other municipalities such as Isfahan and Kerman have also joined the veto in recent days, according to AFP.
Many tutors continue to walk with their dogs in Tehran and other Iranian cities. There is no federal law that prohibits the possession and/or guardianship of the animal, but local restrictions imposed by prosecutors can be applied by police to contain the circulation of animals, pointed out the BBC British network.
Animal arrests and losses
Tutors have already been arrested or had their dogs confiscated. Since 2019, when the first ban on the capital arose, tutors have been arrested or had their dogs confiscated a few times for performing public tours. Therefore, there are those who have begun to walk with the animals in isolated areas at night or began to take them to walk by car, trying to escape the inspection.
Iran’s Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance has prohibited pet products advertising in 2010. In 2014, a bill was proposed in Parliament that would allow fine and even whipping who walks with dogs. The legislation was not approved, however.
