In Trump’s sights, Canada and Denmark have already fought a ‘friendly war’ over the island
The conflict became known as the “whisky war”. During the nearly five decades it lasted, the countries involved frequently sent helicopters to the territory to plant their flag. At the time, they removed the flag placed by their rival, placed a new one from their country and left a bottle of whiskey or traditional liqueur.
“I think it was the friendliest of all wars”, commented Melanie Joly, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, at a press conference following an agreement between her government and Denmark.
Conciliation
The conflict finally ended in 2022, peacefully, with a curious result: the piece of rock was divided equally between the two countries. Although they are from different continents, governments have defined a land border between Canada and Denmark.
Canada was invited to join the European Union. But the suggestion raised at the time was treated as a joke by the North American country.
