indignation after the death of six journalists in Gaza
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and Qatar, which is based on the broadcaster Al Jazeera, also denounced an “deliberate attack” of Israel against a tent used by a team from Al Jazeera in the city of Gaza. Among the dead, five were employees of the station.
Six killed in a press tent
On Monday, the death of Mohammed Al Khaldi, a freelance photographic reporter who collaborated occasionally with local media. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of Al-Shifa Hospital, near where the press tent was set up, was the one who announced the death of the professional.
Mohammed Al Khaldi’s death was also confirmed by the Gaza Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Bassal. “Photojournalist Mohammed al Khaldi could not resist the injuries (…). That raises to six the number of victims of this attack,” he told AFP.
Al Jazeera had previously announced the deaths of two journalists and three cameramen. In addition to Anas Al Sharif and Mohammed Al Khaldi, the other press professionals are: Reporter Mohammed Qreiqeh and cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa.
With the blockade of Gaza, the media around the world depend on the coverage of the conflict made by Palestinian journalists. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a plan to authorize foreign reporters to work within Gaza accompanied by the Israeli army, but has not defined dates.
