“Inepta”, “fable”, “aberration”: what the reports say for attempted coup

The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) denounced former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and 33 more people for a coup attempt. The unprecedented accusation points to the formation of a criminal organization to prevent the possession of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), using military personnel, advisors and members of the government to architect an alleged institutional rupture.

Among the crimes attributed to the group are attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup, criminal organization, qualified damage and deterioration of listed heritage. Now, the first class of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) will evaluate whether to accept the complaint and make the investigated defendants.

Bolsonaro’s defense says that complaint is “inept and fanciful”

Former President Jair Bolsonaro’s defense reacted with indignation to the complaint, classifying it as fragile and based exclusively on Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid’s allegation, former ordinant of orders.

“The complaint comes to the height of attributing to the president to participate in contradictory plans with each other, based on a single award-winning denunciation, changed several times by a whistleblower who questions his own voluntariness,” said the lawyers.

The advocates also pointed out that after two years of investigation, no direct proof was found to connect Bolsonaro to any scammer plan. “No message or communication has been identified despite the wanton made on their personal phones,” they claimed.

Braga Netto and Generals deny involvement

The lawyers of General Walter Braga Netto, former defense minister and vice in the Bolsonaro plate in 2022, classified the accusation as “fantasy.” The military has been arrested preventively since December 2024.

“Braga Netto has been detained for more than 60 days without broad access to the file. He was arrested based on a denunciation that did not even have the opportunity to contradict, ”the defense argued.

The legal team also criticized the absence of a supplementary report by the Federal Police before the complaint. “It is inadmissible that, in a democratic rule of law, a process of this magnitude is conducted with such violations of the right of defense,” they said.

Filipe Martins and Marcelo Câmara speak of “political persecution”

The defense of Filipe Martins, former presidential advisor, accused the PGR of being “submissive” to Minister Alexandre de Moraes and classified investigations as “a grotesque show of arbitrariness”.

“This complaint is supported by fables of the denunciation and an investigation conducted with political bias. Let’s prove that all this is false and that this process is null and void from the beginning, ”said the lawyers note.

Marcelo Câmara’s defense, a former Bolsonaro orders, said the prosecution is based on a “confused and politicized investigation.” “We are sure that all facts will be clarified and that acquittal will prevail in the Supreme Court,” they said.

Rodrigo Azevedo talks about “Marked Card Set”

Lieutenant Colonel Rodrigo Azevedo classified the complaint as “the largest legal aberration in history” and stated that the sentence “would be ready”.

“We are facing a scenario where the victim determines the arrest of those who allegedly wanted to kill her, without any concrete proof,” said the defense, in reference to Minister Alexandre de Moraes.

  The first class of the Supreme Court will analyze the complaint and decide whether Bolsonaro and the other accused will become defendants. If the prosecution is accepted, the process will enter the instructional phase, with the collection of new evidence and testimonials. The trial is expected to take place in 2025, before the 2026 presidential elections.
