IR exemption for those who earn up to $ 5,000 should be voted in the 2nd semester, says Motta

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), said on Monday (28) that the vote on the bill that provides for exemption from income tax for those who earn up to $ 5,000 monthly is scheduled to occur only in the second half of 2025.

“We have two months, but it has the period of recess. So I think you may be for the House to vote after the second half.

The special committee responsible for discussing the project text should be installed next week. Deputy Arthur Lira (PP-AL), former mayor, was designated as rapporteur of the bill and will be responsible for presenting the calendar of work. It is expected that the commission will last about two months.

According to Hugo Motta, there is a positive acceptance among deputies regarding the proposal, although the text needs to undergo adjustments to minimize high fiscal impacts. “The challenge is to find the least harmful way for this measure to be established. From the point of view of tax justice, the matter is pacified,” he said.

The proposal was sent by the Government Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) at the end of 2024. If approved later this year, the new income tax exemption range will begin to take force from 2026.

Motta also pointed out that the National Congress intends to act with fiscal responsibility to ensure legal certainty for investments in the country. “We will look for the most balanced and serene driving possible for our country,” he said.
