Is Biden obligated to go to Trump’s inauguration? Tradition was only broken 4 times
Andrew Johnson x Ulysses S. Grant, in 1869. In the role of vice president, Johnson became president after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, with the promise of obstructing the will of the Republican Congress. But as he failed in this mission, he was impeached by the Chamber in 1868. That same year, General Ulysses S. Grant, Johnson’s enemy, won the country’s elections. Johnson refused to attend his opponent’s inauguration the following year.
Donald Trump x Joe Biden, in 2021. Trump warned his followers on social media that he would not be present during the administration change and made a speech encouraging his voters, saying that there had been fraud — he never presented proof. On January 6, his supporters attempted to storm the Capitol. The session was interrupted due to lack of security, and Congress confirmed Biden’s victory only the following day. On Inauguration Day, Trump traveled to his home in Florida.
What will the inauguration be like?
The day of the inauguration is known as Inauguration Day. The ceremony takes place at the Capitol building in Washington.
The vice president-elect is sworn in first. He repeats the same oath of office, in use since 1884, as that of senators, deputies and other federal employees.
The president-elect also recites an oath. It says, “I solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully serve as President of the United States, and to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
