Israel bombs Lebanon amid US truce efforts
In Palestinian territory, war broke out on October 7, when Islamist militiamen in southern Israel killed 1,206 people, most of them civilians, and kidnapped 251, according to an AFP count based on official Israeli data.
Of the 251 captured, around 100 remain captive in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, but 34 were declared dead by the army.
In response, Israel launched a campaign that has already left 43,259 people dead in the territory, according to data from the Hamas Ministry of Health, considered reliable by the UN.
According to government sources cited by the Israeli press, the plan drawn up by American emissaries includes the withdrawal of Hezbollah and the Israeli Army from southern Lebanon, which would be controlled by the Lebanese armed forces and the UN blue helmets.
Lebanon would be responsible for preventing Hezbollah’s rearmament and Israel would maintain its right to defend itself in accordance with international law, according to the document.
Israeli authorities have stated that their soldiers will not withdraw from southern Lebanon until an agreement is reached that meets Israel’s security requirements.
