Israeli soldier leaves Brazil after court orders PF investigation
A column published this Sunday in Haaretz, one of Israel’s main newspapers, says that the case in Brazil would have thrown Israel into a “panic mode”.
Soldier Yuval Vagdani “was on tourism in Bahia and his last known location is Morro de São Paulo, in that state”, says the Palestinian Arab Federation in Brazil (Fepal) — which is unrelated to the court request.
“The Brazilian Federal Court had ordered the Federal Police (PF) to investigate Vagdani. The decision, issued on December 30, 2024 by judge Raquel Soares Charelli, of the Judiciary Section of the Federal District, responds to a request from the Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF ), international organization that defends Palestinian rights”, explains Fepal.
“HRF presented evidence collected through intelligence from open sources, including videos and geolocation data, which prove the soldier’s involvement in the reported actions,” stated Fepal.
Also according to Fepal, the HRF investigation focuses on the period in which Vagdani served in the Givati battalion. “The complaint also highlights the destruction of a corridor in Gaza, which led to the forced expulsion of civilians and profound humanitarian consequences”, it states.
In addition to the investigation, HRF requested the soldier’s provisional arrest, citing risk of escape or destruction of evidence.
