Italy can release up to 10,000 prisoners to relieve overcrowding
People serving sentence for serious crimes such as terrorism, organized crime, rape, immigrant trafficking and kidnapping would be excluded, the ministry added.
According to World Brief’s World Bank database, Italy has one of Europe’s worst prison overcrowding records, with a level of occupation of about 122%.
Any level above 100% indicates that arrests are occupied above their maximum capacity. Only Cyprus, France and Türkiye have higher brands in Europe, according to the database.
The situation of prisoners drew attention in Italy after an increase in the number of suicides and complaints about increasing summer temperatures in detention facilities that have no air conditioning.
However, the early release of prisoners is a politically sensitive measure, and the Ministry of Justice indicated that this would not happen overnight.
The Ministry of Justice has reported that it has created a task force to connect with the arrests and judges of parole to facilitate decisions on individual cases, which will meet weekly and submit a report on your work by September.
