Itamaraty calls representative of the US embassy in Brazil to talk about deported

The Secretary of Brazilian Communities abroad and Itamaraty’s consular and legal affairs, Márcia Loureiro, called on the US embassy business in Brasilia, Gabriel Escobar, for a meeting on the treatment given to Brazilian citizens deported last Saturday (25 ). The deported people arrived in Manaus on a flight chartered by the US government. The Brazilians reported that they were handcuffed and treated inappropriately along the way. According to the reports, Brazilians faced aggressions, difficulties in using the bathroom and lack of food during the flight.

The call of the US diplomat took place after a meeting between President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Chancellor Mauro Vieira.

Among the alternatives considered were the intervention of the Brazilian Embassy in Washington or a direct contact between Vieira and the new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Currently, the American embassy in Brazil is led by Gabriel Escobar, as ambassador Elizabeth Bagley, nominated by former President Joe Biden, has already left the country.
