The first lady Rosângela da Silva, Janja, was thrilled to remember that Pope Francis changed letters with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) while the petista was arrested in Curitiba (PR). According to Janja, Lula spent thoughtful Monday, after the death of the Pontiff, feeling that “lost a dear friend and a walk.”

“The Pope talked a lot about the political prison (of Lula). Not by chance, the first trip my husband made when leaving prison was to meet the Pope,” the first lady said in an interview with the newspaper S.Paulo Folhapublished this Tuesday (22).

Janja said that the prison period was especially painful for Lula, aggravated by the loss of grandson, Arthur Araújo Lula da Silva, in 2019, at the age of seven. “He (Lula) decided to write to the spiritual leader,” he said.

Francis The answer, she said, had a deep impact on the petista. “The message of Pope Francis in this circumstance was fundamental for him to know that he was on the right track, the search (for recognition) of innocence,” said Janja.

“And a movie went to my head because in February I had a very exciting date with him that occurred after he (Francisco) had left the hospital.”

Janja referred to the Pope on February 12 this year at a Vatican hearing. At the time, the first lady said she thanked the Pontiff for the prayers for Lula’s health and talked to him about the global alliance against hunger and poverty, released during the G-20 leaders in Rio de Janeiro in 2024.

The first lady also stated in the interview that the world lost “an important, not only spiritual but political leader of action-oriented action.”

Papa Francisco died at the age of 88, at his home at Casa Santa Marta, at Vatican, at 7:35 am (2:35 am Brasília). The last public appearance of the Pontiff was from the balcony of the São Pedro Basilica on Easter Sunday. Francisco wished happiness and blessed the thousands gathered at the scene for the last time.
