Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife sells 42% of her Amazon shares, worth R$68 billion

After acquiring 400 million shares of Amazon with her 2019 divorce from the company’s founder, Jeff Bezos, billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott had already been selling shares over the years, but has now reduced her stake in the technology giant by almost half.

A regulatory filing with the SEC, filed on Tuesday the 14th and dated September 30th, shows that Scott now holds 81.1 million shares—a drop of 58 million from the previous year, as reported by Bloomberg. This 42% reduction is equivalent to almost US$12.6 billion (R$68 billion) at the closing share price on Tuesday.

The document does not specify whether the reduction in Amazon’s holdings is the result of stock sales, donations or both. Yield Giving, Scott’s charity, did not respond to Fortune’s request for comment.

Under the terms of the divorce, Bezos still exercises voting authority over his holdings and is required to disclose them annually. Now, the latest document reflects how Scott’s wealth and his decision to give it away without any restrictions evolved.

With an estimated net worth of US$32 billion (R$173 billion), Scott obtained most of his wealth after divorcing Bezos in 2019 and promised to donate the majority of the money.

After taking around 4% of the technology giant, it donated US$19 billion (R$103 billion) to more than 2,000 non-profit organizations in the last five years. Since the divorce, Amazon shares have more than doubled.

Scott is dedicated to donating his billions to diversity, equity and inclusion and the Giving Pledge.

Scott is no stranger to philanthropy. The average value of the thousands of donations she has made since her 2019 divorce is approximately $5 million (R$27 million) — and many of her recent philanthropic efforts have been toward diversity, equity and inclusion causes.

One of his most recent donations includes $42 million to 10,000 Degrees, a Bay Area nonprofit that expands college access for low-income and largely nonwhite students.

This is in addition to his recent $70 million donation to Historically Black Colleges and Universities through the nonprofit UNCF. The program, launched in 2021, aims to help universities close a funding gap compared to white or elite institutions, seeking to provide long-term financial stability and a permanent revenue stream for minority schools.

Over the years, other diverse causes the billionaire has donated to include $84 million to the Girl Scouts of the USA, $20 million to Vermont’s Champlain Housing Trust, $436 million to Habitat for Humanity and $275 million to Planned Parenthood. She had also previously given the UNCF $10 million in 2020.

After signing the Giving Pledge in 2020, his giving has so far surpassed many of his peers.

Despite the flood of donations, Scott is still richer than when she split from Bezos as her Amazon shares continue to rise.
