Judge blocks Trump’s ban on international students at Harvard
On Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the government would begin to “aggressively” revoke the visas granted to Chinese students who attend American universities, including those with bonds with the Chinese Communist Party and those who study in critical areas, which he did not specify.
More than 275,000 Chinese students are enrolled in hundreds of US colleges, providing an important source of revenue for schools and a crucial talent channel for US technology companies. The decision generated despair and frustration among students who have offers for next year.
Prior to Rubio’s announcement, the offensive against US faculties had largely restricted to Ivy League schools such as Harvard, Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania, accused of leftist prejudice and anti -Semitism.
Lynn Pasquerella, president of the American Association and Universities Association’s Defense Group, said the fact that the Trump government targets foreign students will have negative consequences for institutions and the US.
“Chinese students, in particular, now that they are being subjected to strict scrutiny, are looking for other places,” he said. “This is a great loss for us. It’s a brain escape.”
