Law that affects Brazilians in Portugal comes into effect tomorrow; what changes
What changes
More difficulty in legalizing immigrants. Between additions and revocations of articles from the previous law, from 2007, the text presents a tightening of Portuguese migration policy in several aspects.
Permission for work visas for immigrants. Now, the law only gives permission to professionals considered qualified.
Tourists will not be able to apply for residency. One of the most used ways by Brazilians to be able to live in Portugal was to apply for residency after entering as tourists. The new rule eliminates this possibility.
Immigrants in Portugal will only have the right to bring their family members after two years of residence permit. Under the new law, the immigrant will need to prove that they had a spouse who lived with them for at least 18 months immediately before entering Portugal. The deadline does not apply to minors.
Immigration police will be responsible for monitoring, controlling and monitoring the stay of immigrants in the country. Before the publication of the new rules, the Diário da República had already made official, in July, the creation of the National Unit for Foreigners and Borders, within the Public Security Police.
