Lula confirms candidacy for reelection and raises tone against extreme right

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated this Thursday (19) that he will run for re-election this year, during a party event in São Bernardo do Campo (SP). The declaration occurs at a time of reorganization of the government camp and signals the anticipation of the political clash for the October election.

When speaking at the headquarters of the ABC Metalworkers Union, Lula adopted a combative tone and linked his candidacy to the dispute against ideological opponents. “I’m going to be a candidate, because as long as this young man with 80 springs has the energy of 30, the far right won’t govern this country again,” he said.

In addition to confirming his intention to run, the president expanded the scope of the political confrontation by stating that the dispute goes beyond the domestic scenario. “Now, our fight is not just internal, it is international,” he declared.

Lula also stated that he is preparing an article aimed at the five permanent members of the UN Security Council — the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and Russia — criticizing the actions of these powers in global conflicts.

Lula suggests that Alckmin talk to Haddad to decide whether to run for the Senate

‘I don’t know if Geraldo will be a candidate for the Senate, okay? The vice position is open to him, but you have to assess what is good in São Paulo to help you,’ Lula told Haddad

“The Security Council was created to have responsibility and maintain security in the world. Because it is the five who are waging war”, he stated.

The speech took place during an event in which the PT officially announced the pre-candidacy of the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad (PT), for the government of São Paulo. The meeting brought together party leaders and reinforced the strategy of aligning the main candidates from the government camp.

Lula also associated the election with a clash of values. “It is an election of democracy against fascism; of freedom against oppression; of freedom of the press against lies,” he said.

By calling on supporters, the president indicated that he intends to transform the dispute into a plebiscite on the political project underway in the country. “This is not my fight, it’s not Haddad’s, it’s not Alckmin’s. This is your fight”, he stated.

Confirmation of the candidacy tends to intensify polarization and bring forward electoral dynamics, with a direct impact on the political environment and economic expectations in the coming months.
