Lula: money from the Mariana agreement needs to be used well and will be managed by BNDES
BRASÍLIA (Reuters) – President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva this Friday demanded that the government receive the resources from the billion-dollar repair agreement for the collapse of a dam in Mariana (MG) concluded by the government with the mining companies Vale (VALE3 ), BHP and Samarco are well used.
In a speech during the signing ceremony of the agreement, which provides for the payment of 100 billion reais in new resources, Lula demanded that his government’s ministries carry out projects to use the money to “repair a misfortune that a company caused”.
The president also said that the resources will be managed by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES).

An iron ore tailings dam from Samarco, a joint venture between Vale and BHP, broke in November 2015 and released a wave of giant mud that left 19 dead, hundreds homeless and hit communities, forests and rivers, including the Doce River to the sea in Espírito Santo.
