President José Sarney ruled under the constant threat of the late dictatorship, but with extraordinary skill and political commitment created the conditions for us to write the 1988 citizen constitution, and change the history of Brazil, ”Lula wrote.
40 years ago, Brazil had ended military dictatorship and was moving towards redemocratization
With the constitutional oath of inauguration, the then vice president of the Republic, José Sarney, had closed 40 years ago, on March 15, 1985, a dark chapter of Brazilian history
The president said that in 40 years of democracy, Brazil has undergone “very difficult times”, but with “important steps for the construction of the country we dream.”
“Brazil is today the country that grows with social inclusion. That fights hunger and inequalities. It generates jobs, increases income and improves the quality of life of families. Who takes care of everyone, with a special look for those who need it most. Without democracy, none of this would be possible. Therefore, it is necessary to defend it every day of those who, even today, plan the return of authoritarianism, ”said Lula.
