Lula reacts to Trump’s threat and says Brics “wasn’t born to face anyone”
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) said on Monday (7) that BRICS “was not born to face anyone,” in response to statements by US President Donald Trump. The Republican threatened to impose 10% rates on countries that, according to him, align with “anti -American policies” in the emerging economies bloc.
“I don’t find it very responsible and seriously a president of the republic of the size of the United States to threaten the world over the internet. This is not correct. The world has changed. We don’t want emperor,” Lula said after the BRICS summit closure in Rio de Janeiro.
After Trump defends Bolsonaro, Lula says that Brazil does not accept “external interference”
Without quoting the US president, Lula said that “defense of democracy in Brazil is a topic that competes to Brazilians”
According to the Brazilian president, BRICS aims to be a “exhaust valve that humanity needs” and promote a new model of international cooperation, focusing on the development of poorer countries.
“BRICS is just another way of doing politics, something more supportive. Bank of BRICS is concerned with helping developing countries develop. We are not here to compete with anyone,” he said.
Lula said he also believed that BRICS is bothering part of the international scenario, but warned that unilateral measures, such as those suggested by Trump, could generate reactions.
“If he thinks he can tax, countries also have the right to tax. There is the policy of reciprocity,” he said.
Brazil received this Monday the summit of BRICS leaders – a block formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – with expanded presence of new members, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and United Arab Emirates.
