Lula seeks to normalize relations with Trump and says: “Bolsonaro is the past”

During a press conference in Malaysia, this Monday (27), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated that he told the President of the United States, Donald Trump, that Jair Bolsonaro (PL) “is part of the past of Brazilian politics”. The statement was made after Trump mentioned the former chief executive before the bilateral meeting between the two leaders.

Lula reported that he personally explained to Trump that the trial of Bolsonaro and his allies at the Federal Supreme Court (STF) was conducted seriously and with robust evidence. According to him, the investigations demonstrated the seriousness of the 2022 coup acts, which included plans of violence against Brazilian authorities.

In a meeting with Lula in Malaysia, the US president reportedly recognized the error in the sanctions and signaled the immediate start of bilateral negotiations

“I told him the seriousness of what they tried to do in Brazil. They had a plan to kill me, my deputy and minister Alexandre de Moraes. They were tried with the right to defense,” said the president.

The PT member also emphasized that the issue does not influence the diplomatic relationship between Brazil and the United States, which is now experiencing a moment of rapprochement.

“I don’t talk in a personal tone. I talk in a political tone, in the interests of my country”, declared Lula, highlighting that the focus of the dialogue was the removal of the 50% tariffs imposed by the USA on Brazilian products.

During the press conference, Lula also confirmed that he had invited Trump to participate in COP30, which will be held in 2026 in Belém (PA). The objective, according to him, is to promote a global debate on the climate that involves “all voices”, including divergent ones.

The conversation about Bolsonaro, according to Itamaraty interlocutors, reinforced Lula’s intention to turn the page on ideological disputes and focus on practical results in the bilateral relationship.
