Lula signs decree creating family farming research and innovation program

The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) signed this Tuesday (3) a decree for the creation of the National Research and Innovation Program for Family Farming and Agroecology (PNPIAF), in a ceremony at Palácio do Planalto.

The program will be aimed at promoting research and innovation actions aimed at family farming, focusing on the agroecological transition, territories, the preservation of biomes and the sustainability of agroecosystems.

The Minister of Agrarian Development and Family Farming (MDA), Paulo Teixeira (PT)stated that the agreement provides for the transfer of resources to Embrapa to dedicate to research into family farming. “To further increase food production,” he said.

Also at the ceremony, the ministries of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC), Agrarian Development and Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) signed an ordinance establishing the Mais Alimentos Program Advisory Council, with the participation of government representatives and family farming entities.

“In the first year of Mais Alimentos, investment in mechanization grew by R$10 billion, 33% in hiring. In this first four months of the Harvest Plan, investment in machinery, tractors and agricultural and irrigation implements increased by 30%”, highlighted Teixeira.

“We want to meet the target of 66% technification of family farming in 2033 and 35% mechanization”, added the minister.

Also at the event, the Ministry of Agriculture and Petrobras signed an agreement to “strengthen the production and development of fertilizers and inputs” for plant nutrition.

The agreement provides for the expansion and modernization of manufacturing facilities for national fertilizer production, training of professionals, development of advanced technologies, improvement of infrastructure and logistics, technology transfer and sustainable rural development.
