President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva decided to veto the bill that provided for the increase in the number of federal deputies from 513 to 531, approved by Congress at the end of June. The information is from the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo.

The decision was communicated on Wednesday (16), last day for sanction or veto of the proposal, and meets a recommendation of the Ministry of Finance, which pointed out risks to budgetary predictability and the Fiscal Responsibility Law.

The bill, which was supported by leaders such as Mayor Hugo Motta, and former President Arthur Lira, would have an estimated annual impact of about $ 65 million, including wages, benefits and structure for new deputies.

The proposal would mainly benefit the states of Paraíba and Alagoas, whose bench would be reduced if the increase was not approved.

With the veto, Congress has until October 1 to analyze the presidential decision.

If the veto is maintained, the Federal Supreme Court (STF) ordered that the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) will define the number of deputies per state for the legislature that begins in 2027. Sources heard by the report indicate that overthrowing the veto will be difficult, especially in the Senate, due to the unpopularity of the measure.
