Mauro Cid indicates Lula’s former commander as a witness in action on coup d’état

The defense of Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, former Jair Bolsonaro (PL) orders, presented to the Supreme Court (STF) his defense in the criminal action that investigates the attempted coup.
The lawyers call for Cid’s summary acquittal and indicated nine witnesses – all military, including generals who headed the army in both the Bolsonaro government and at the beginning of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) management.
Among the names indicated is General Júlio Cesar de Arruda, the first army commander under Lula, fired after only 21 days of government. At the time, he weighed on him the resistance to nullify Cid’s appointment to command an elite unit in Goiânia. The decision was later reviewed by the current force commander, General Tomás Paiva.

Also on the list of witnesses is General Marco Antonio Freire Gomes, who headed the army at the end of the Bolsonaro government.
Last month, the first class of the Supreme Court accepted the complaint of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) against Cid and seven investigated, including former President Bolsonaro. With the decision, all became defendants and the criminal action was officially open.
Cid’s defense maintains that he acted only within his institutional functions as a direct advisor to Bolsonaro. According to the lawyers, there is not enough evidence to keep it in the case, and the case should be filed without judgment.
Despite signed awarded report agreement with the Federal Police, Cid was formally reported by PGR. The agreement, if approved and fulfilled, may benefit the military with reduction of penalty at the end of the process, but does not prevent him from responding to the accusations.
The inclusion of high -ranking military between witnesses signals a defensive strategy that seeks to reinforce the thesis that Cid acted under hierarchical orders, without protagonism in the articulations that led to scammer acts from 8 January.
