Milei Migratory Reform has already been tested by Macri
The Macri DNU was published in January 2017 and modified the 2004 migration law, the same one that now Milei wants to modify. The decree allowed to expel immediately, without legal proceedings, foreigners involved in any criminal proceedings, without considering the offense, the penalties, or if it had been convicted, if it had permanent residence, work, etc. The document also authorized deportation for administrative absences in migratory procedures. There were at least 3,000 expulsions during the DNU effectiveness. To get an idea, the expulsions of foreigners in Argentina left 1760 in 2014- before the DNU- to 5110 in 2018, with the DNU, according to data published by the Argentine press.
The Argentine Migration Law has completed 20 years and is a world reference of human rights, as it considers that the act of migrating is a human right. Therefore, any foreigner, regardless of his migratory status, is entitled to the same services as the Argentines. as access to free and public health and education systems.
Currently, according to data from the 2022 census, of the 46 million inhabitants, 2 million are immigrants. Of this number, 365,000 access the educational system and more than half of immigrants use private medicine.
The government also invests in the narrative that most drug traffickers and people involved with other crimes are foreigners, but, according to the 2023 report of the Federal Penitentiary Service, 84% of the prison population is of Argentine nationality and 16% of other countries.
