Milei’s party surprises with more than 40% of votes in legislative election
Of the 24 electoral districts it competed in, the LLA won in 16. Mendoza was the province where the party won with the highest percentage (53.86%), followed by Entre Ríos (52.90%), San Luis (51.49%), Chaco (45.70%) and La Rioja (43.86%).
Milei’s Minister of Security, Patricia Bullrich, was elected senator for the LLA. It is worth remembering that the Argentine voting system is based on closed lists, that is, voters do not vote for a candidate, but for a party or coalition.
One of the surprises was the victory of Milei’s party in the capital, Buenos Aires. Last month, the party suffered an electoral defeat in the province, the most populous in the country, and a currency race began that devalued the peso by 8%.
With 95.08% of the votes counted, Milei’s party had won 17 of the 35 seats for the Chamber available for Buenos Aires. The Força Pátria party obtained 16, while the Left and Workers Front received two seats for the province.
The election renewed 127 of the 257 seats in the Chamber of Deputies (almost half). In addition, senators were elected to occupy 24 of the 72 seats in the Senate, equivalent to one third. They will take office from December 10th
High abstention
The election to renew the Argentine legislature had the participation of 67.92% of voters and 32.08% abstention. Since 1983, electoral participation in Argentina has been historically high, exceeding 70% of the electorate. However, in recent years, a downward trend has been observed.
