Moraes orders extradition of fugitives from January 8th who are in Argentina
The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, ordered the extradition of Brazilians investigated for participation in the January 8 coup acts in Argentina. Around 60 people crossed the border to escape investigations. The determination complies with a request from the Federal Police.
Those investigated violated electronic ankle monitors and left Brazil on the ground. The Federal Police recovered some of the fugitives in June, as part of Operation Lesa Pátria. The investigation believes it is possible that the fugitives requested asylum in Argentina, especially considering the friendly relationship between former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and Javier Milei.
The minister’s order will still be evaluated by the Department of Asset Recovery and International Legal Cooperation (DRCI), which is part of the Ministry of Justice. Only then will the procedures be carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Under the Extradition Agreement between the States Parties to Mercosur, Brazil and Argentina, signatories to the agreement, undertake to reciprocally hand over people who “are in their respective territories and who are wanted by the competent authorities of another State Party”.
