Moraes refuses government assistance after Trump’s sanctions, says Jornal
Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) has decided not to trigger US court against financial sanctions imposed by US President Donald Trump under the so-called Magntsky Law. The information was released by Folha de S. Paulo.
The measure had been articulated by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) and the Attorney General of the Union (AGU), as part of Brazil’s institutional reaction to growing tension with Washington.
According to the newspaper, during dinner at the Palace of Alvorada on Thursday (31), Moraes personally announced his decision to Lula, ministers of the Supreme and members of the government summit. According to reports, the minister said that he does not intend to establish any formal relationship with the US at this time, although he did not rule out future international action.

The institutional defense proposal was interpreted as another political gesture of alignment between the executive and the judiciary in the face of external threats and the attempt of foreign interference in the country’s internal processes. Union’s general lawyer, Jorge Messias, said he will respect Moraes’s decision.
Calculated strategy
The Brazilian government’s response to the US offensive has been built with caution and articulation between Lula, STF ministers, financial system representatives and political allies. Lula received last night the ministers Gilmar Mendes, Luis Roberto Barroso and Cristiano Zanin. The president has reinforced that Brazil is willing to dialogue with the US about 50% trade tariffs imposed by Trump, but considers any interference on the subjects involving national sovereignty.
The government’s evaluation, according to reports heard by the newspaper, is that the inclusion of Moraes’s name in a list of sanctions for alleged human rights violations the purpose of the magnitsky law and seeks only to press the STF to retreat in the judgment of the 2022 coup attempt, which has Jair Bolsonaro (PL) as a defendant.
