Nine deputies resign from positions in Brasília to take over city hall
This Wednesday, the 1st, nine federal deputies resigned from their mandates to take over mayorships in different cities in Brazil. Among them, seven were incumbents and two were substitutes who were holding the position.
They are:
- 1. Abilio Brunini (PL), in Cuiabá (MT)
- 2. Alberto Mourão (MDB), in Praia Grande (SP)
- 3. Carmen Zanotto (Citizenship), in Lages (SC)
- 4. Dr. Benjamim (União Brasil), in Açailândia (MA)
- 5. Gerlen Diniz (PP), in Sena Madureira (AC)
- 6. Hélio Leite (União Brasil), in Castanhal (PA)
- 7. Paulinho Freire (União Brasil), in Natal (RN)
- 8. Ricardo Silva (PSD), in Ribeirão Preto (SP)
- 9. Washington Quaquá (PT), in Maricá (RJ)
In addition to these nine parliamentarians, two other deputies who had been elected to city hall did not need to resign, as they were no longer holding their position. Márcio Correa (PL), who is now mayor of Anápolis (GO), and Naumi Amorim (PSD), from Caucaia (CE), had already ended their roles as substitutes.
The only senator elected in this year’s election was Rodrigo Cunha (União Brasil), now vice-mayor of Maceió (AL).
In November, the Estadão pointed out that nine federal deputies who were elected mayors in this year’s municipal elections spent, in total, R$ 831.8 thousand in advertising quota paid with resources from the Chamber of Deputies. Parliamentarians sought to reinforce their image with the electorate since the beginning of 2024 but denied that they used the advertising quota for electoral purposes.
