No return date, Eduardo’s candidacy is uncertain and moves joints
If before the vacancy of Federal Deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL) to run the Senate for Sao Paulo was certainly on the right and the unknown hovered only about the chosen of Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) to represent the coalition in the second place of the dispute, now not even the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro escapes speculation about his destination.
Allies already calculate who could take their place in the face of a possible permanence in the United States – he has no date to return – and eventual withdrawal. The parliamentarian became the target of an inquiry by the Federal Police that investigates acting against authorities of the judiciary abroad.

Eduardo’s candidacy is defended by his father, who says he is entitled to an appointment as agreed with Tarcisio. In May, the governor showed that the state secretary of Public Security, Guilherme Derrite, who exchanged the PL for PP aims at the Senate, would be shown to the plate, to the Senate, tapered the negotiations. The agreement would also bring by table União Brasil, with whom the new party of the secretary must form a “superfederation” for next year.

Eduardo’s situation, however, brings doubts to politicians with traffic at the Bandeirantes Palace. Some of them, under reserve, evaluate that the absence of the deputy in the election would shuffle the game again, making room for Tarcisio to negotiate another place with the political group that aims to bring together PL, Republicans, PSD and MDB next year. These parties, as well as Union and Progressives, have significant benches in Congress, which guarantees them access to resources from the electoral and party funds and draft advertising on radio and TV.
A few weeks ago, PL President Valdemar Costa Neto said Eduardo would return to Brazil after four months of license from the House. The request for removal began to count on March 20 and therefore the return is expected until the end of July. On the other hand, there are those who understand that Eduardo could dispute the Senate even outside Brazil, considering that the law requires electoral domicile, not effective residence.
– I find it difficult to drive abroad from an election campaign, as it will open legal and political breaches for contestations. Another aspect is in relation to debates, participation in events, among other commitments inherent to majority disputes such as Senate, as well as accountability – evaluates political scientist Rodrigo Prando, from the Mackenzie Presbyterian University.
Different scenarios
In any case, interlocutors have considered that it is still early for definitions and that the fact that Bolsonaro puts herself as a candidate, even ineligible, leaving Tarcisio, a possible name from the right in the presidency dispute, in the waiting line, makes any agreement now. A source mentions, for example, the possibility of Tarcisio’s succession in Sao Paulo, if he chooses to fight the Plateau, to serve to weaken Lula and the PT at the national level, as he can attract some caption that occupies the Esplanade today.
The candidacy for the government is covered by politicians such as Secretary of Government, Gilberto Kassab (PSD), Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), and the president of the Legislative Assembly, André do Prado (PL). In addition to them, the current deputy governor, Felício Ramuth (PSD), and even former governor Rodrigo Garcia, who is without a party, but approached the MDB, could appear at the polls, in the evaluation of some experienced politicians.
In addition to Eduardo and Derrite, Federal Deputy Ricardo Salles (Novo) is another right -wing politician with plans to dispute the government or Senate, although he is isolated.
On the left, a PT wing evaluates launching Finance Minister Fernando Haddad to the government or Senate, but he has said he does not intend to be a candidate. Other party politicians understand that a better candidacy at the center would be more likely to break down pockets in Sao Paulo.
In this sense, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), a former state governor three times, would be a good option, especially by the recall inside. The PSB, however, pressures for maintaining the victorious plate with Lula and nods with the candidacy of the Minister of Entrepreneurship, Márcio França, who took office as governor in place of Alckmin and lost to João Doria in 2018.
