OAB repudiates threat from Trump to Moraes and defends sovereignty: ‘unacceptable’
Critics of the minister accuse him for alleged human rights violations and defend his inclusion on the US sanctions list. For this, there is no need for judicial proceedings, only the decision of the Executive based on reports or documents from international organizations, press and testimonies. Punishments include: blocking goods on American soil, freezing accounts and the prohibition of entry into the country.
Sanctions may be imposed based on non -judicial evidence, but need plausible grounds. They are applied to those responsible for extrajudicial executions, torture, arbitrary arrests, forced disappearances and other flagrant violations of the rights to life, freedom and security, according to the text of American legislation itself.
Moraes has been the target of Trump government. In February, US State Department was released messages with explicit references to the minister’s request for scholarships to be excluded from an American online service. “Respect for sovereignty is a two -way road with all US partners, including Brazil,” said the agency.
Eduardo Bolsonaro acts to freeze alleged Moraes accounts in the US. The PL-SP deputy works with Donald Trump base congressmen and members of the US government to apply the sanction to the minister. The theme was also mentioned in late February between blogger Paulo Figueiredo – drafted in the US and also the target of Moraes – and businessman Elon Musk, now aide of Trump.
The STF’s staff has already denied that Moraes has an account in the country. The measure, however, could reach his accounts in Brazilian banks operating in the US, as well as credit card flags.
