“Papa Francisco made history by fighting inequalities,” says Lula, at the Vatican

After accompanying Pope Francis’ exyquency mass at the Vatican, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Saturday (26) that the name of the Pontiff marked the story and also highlighted the work of the Holy Father in combating social inequalities around the world.

“We lost the most important religious leader of this first quarter of the 21st century. Papa Francisco was not just a Pope. He was a Pope concerned with the Gaza War, hungry, with the things that afflict the people around the world,” the president said in a quick conversation with journalists.

Accompanied by the first lady, Lula recalled that many Brazilians had a great appreciation for Pope Francis’ behavior, as a man and as religious: “I think it was a debt we paid to a man who provided services to humanity.”

“God wants the next Pope to be equal to him, with his own heart, with the same religious commitments, with the same commitment to fight the inequality as Pope Francis. I return to Brazil for sure that we do our duty – as Christians, as religious and politicians. To come to the burial of an admirable person like Pope Francis.”

War

Commenting on the moment of registered dialogue in the Vatican himself between the president of the United States, Donald Trump, and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, Lula said he was unaware of the content of the conversation, but stressed the importance of maintaining dialogue as an alternative to the end of the war between Ukraine and Russia.

“I don’t know what they talked about. I can’t intuit about the conversation. What is important is that if you talk to see if you find a way out for this war. This war is running out of explanation. No one can explain and nobody wants to talk about peace,” the president said.

“And Brazil continues to insist that the solution is to make the two (leaders) feel at a negotiating table and find a solution. Not only for Ukraine and Russia, but also for the violence that Israel committed against the Gaza Strip,” Lula added.
