PF delegate will be the first Brazilian to take command of Interpol
The Federal Police (PF) delegate Valdecy Urquiza was confirmed this Tuesday (5) as the new secretary general of Interpol. The organization’s Executive Committee, which brings together police corporations from 196 countries, elected Urquiza to the post in June. This Tuesday, during the entity’s General Assembly, held in Glasgow, Scotland, the Brazilian’s name was confirmed for the position.
The PF delegate will take up the post in 2025. The mandate is five years, extendable for another five years.
Urquiza is currently vice president for the Americas at Interpol. It will be the first time in more than a hundred years that the organization will be headed by a citizen of a developing country, such as Brazil.
Federal delegate Valdecy Urquiza coordinated Interpol’s global activities in the areas of human trafficking, migrant smuggling and sexual exploitation of children on the internet.
Interpol’s goal is to assist cooperation between global police forces. The institution’s executive body is made up of more than 1,000 professionals.
Valdecy Urquiza is from São Luís, capital of Maranhão. He graduated in Law from the University of Fortaleza, in Ceará, and joined the Federal Police in 2004.
Throughout his career, he assumed strategic positions within the Brazilian corporation, such as the Information Technology Directorate and the International Police Cooperation Division.
He has also taken on strategic roles at Interpol, coordinating operations against human trafficking and the sexual exploitation of children on the internet.
