PL leader charges a reaction after Zambelli’s arrest: “tomorrow, it will be any of us”
The arrest of federal deputy licensed Carla Zambelli (PL-SP), on Tuesday (29), in Italy, provoked a reaction from the PL leader in the House, Deputy Sostenes Cavalcante (RJ). In a statement, he classified detention as a sign of “institutional rupture under construction” and urged the other parliamentarians to react in defense of the legislature.
“This is no longer an isolated case. It is a sign that institutional rupture is no longer a risk, it is a reality under construction. If Parliament accepts the political exile of its members, the censorship of its leaders and the criminalization of opposition, will be signing its own surrender.
Carla Zambelli’s arrest can accelerate the cancellation of her mandate in the House; understand
Deputy convicted by the Supreme Court faces three paths for loss of mandate: decision of the House table, cassation in the TSE or removal from excessive absences
Remember case Cesare Battisti can open precedent against the extradition of Zambelli
Just as Brazil denied Battisti’s extradition in the past, Italy can reject or authorize the submission of a pocket -sentenced deputy sentenced to Brazil
Zambelli was arrested in Rome after being included in Interpol’s red list, which made her internationally sought. She had been at large since May, when she left Brazil after being sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Supreme Court (STF), in a decision that has already become final. The penalties involve the crimes of ideological falsehood and invasion of the electronic system of the National Council of Justice (CNJ).

Chamber adopts more cautious tone
The PL leader’s statement contrasts with the attitude adopted by the Chamber of Deputies summit. The president of the House, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), said that it is not up to the legislature to review the arrest of the parliamentarian, as it is a final decision of the Supreme Court.
“The role of the House is to analyze the request for loss of mandate that is already being processed in the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ),” said Motta.
The president of the CCJ, Deputy Paulo Azi (Union-BA), reiterated that the case will follow its normal course and will not be accelerated due to the arrest. The rapporteur of representation against Zambelli, Deputy Diego Garcia (Republicans-PR), should still take a few weeks to present his opinion.
Political isolation
Despite the party leadership note, the main exponents of pockets have avoided any more forceful defense of Zambelli. PL President Valdemar Costa Neto remains silent, and former President Jair Bolsonaro said in June that “it has nothing to do with Carla Zambelli.”
The statement exposed the distance between the two, which had been broken since the episode in which the deputy pulled a gun and chased a man on the streets of Sao Paulo, on the eve of the second round of the 2022 elections.
The gesture was pointed out by Bolsonaro himself as a factor that damaged his campaign to reelection. Since then, the deputy has been seen with caution even within the PL himself.
