Portugal and Spain plan high-speed trains between capitals by 2030
Currently, there are no direct trains between the two capitals. The two Iberian cities are connected by around forty daily flights, with an average duration of one hour.
The project is part of a strategy to offer a more competitive alternative for travelers and a more ecological option, aligned with European climate objectives, recalled the Ministry.
Both countries also committed to studying, before 2027, the costs and benefits of a possible adaptation of the Iberian gauge to the European standard.
Railways in Spain and Portugal currently have a different gauge than the European standard, except on Spanish high-speed lines.
