Video generated revolt in the Brazilian community that lives in Portugal. Founder of the Association for Support for Emigrants, Immigrants and Families, Sônia Gomes said it was a clear example of xenophobia and said he triggered the Portuguese authorities to investigate the case.
“Most perverse expression of xenophobia”. This is how Ana Paula Costa, president of the Brazilian House of Brazil, defined the video. For her, the recording is the “violent and criminal representation of anti-immigration discourse” that has become increasingly common in Portugal.
Police investigate the case. To the Facto Newsthe Portuguese Public Security Police reported that, as soon as it became aware of the video, they called the Cybercriminal Center of the Criminal Investigation Department, which has already identified the suspect. “At this time, as it is a public crime, we refer the case to the competent judicial authorities,” he added.
THE Facto News contacted the Public Prosecutor of Portugal, but got no return. The report also sought the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to question whether the Brazilian Embassy in Portugal took any initiative, and is awaiting response. In both cases, the space is still open for manifestation.
Portuguese legislation punishes the crime of discrimination. Article 240 of the country’s Penal Code provides for a sentence of arrest of six months to five years of detention for crimes of discrimination and incitement to hatred and violence motivated by color, race, ethnic origin, religion, gender or sexual orientation.
