“PP does not have a competitive candidate and I hope he fulfills the agreement”, says Moro about Paraná

At the center of a dispute surrounding the candidacy for the government of Paraná, senator Sergio Moro (União-PR) called on the PP to fulfill an agreement in the state and endorse its intention to run for office. PP and União Brasil are in the final stages of implementing the federation, but local disputes have caused impasses and led to the departure of members. President of the PP, senator Ciro Nogueira (PI) said he will not support Moro, which generated a reaction from the command of União Brasil.

— We’ll have to wait. For now, the actions that have been taken are all aimed at ratifying the federation. Now, the agreements have to be fulfilled. In Paraná, there was a prior agreement from the PP that there would be support for my candidacy. We hope it will be fulfilled. It is always said there that the PP fulfills agreements. They have no competitive candidate to present. And I lead the research by a certain margin — said Moro in response.

The parliamentarian also states that, for now, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro’s presidential candidacy is a “test” and remembers that there are governors also capable of entering the race.

Who should you be the right-wing candidate against Lula in 2026?

The ideal would be for there to be a union between the right and center-right. The country cannot handle four more years of Lula’s mandate. We would need to present a different proposal for the country. What we have are the four governors who are always mentioned a lot. Tarcísio (de Freias), (Ronaldo) Caiado, (Romeu) Zema and Ratinho (Junior). And now also the name of Flávio Bolsonaro. I don’t know how this will unfold in the coming months.

There is resistance in the parties to Flávio Bolsonaro. Will he really be the candidate?

It is an indication from (former) president (Jair) Bolsonaro, who is in a difficult situation. He has every right to make this recommendation. They are testing the name to see whether it will be accepted by public opinion and the electorate. They will have to wait for developments. My immediate concern is my state, with the pre-candidacy for government in Paraná.

There are a series of disagreements in the federation between the PP and União Brasil, including in Paraná. Will this agreement between the parties really be formalized?

We’ll have to wait. And I lead the research even with a certain margin.

Were you surprised by Ciro Nogueira’s announcement that he does not support your pre-candidacy?

I was surprised by the terms. I knew there were occasional differences, but nothing that could prevent or make it difficult at this level. União Brasil’s response came next. There is still room to build a joint solution.

Does the PP’s resistance have to do with its role in Lava-Jato? The party was one of the hardest hit, including arrests…

I respect that there could be an obstacle in this sense, but I don’t see a cause and effect relationship, because the characters are different.

Will you support the appointment of the Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, to the STF?

I’m waiting for the message from the president (Lula), which hasn’t come yet. I don’t know whether this recommendation will come to fruition or not. Before the message comes, I have no need to take a position. What I have always pointed out is that the ideal would be to appoint people who are more independent and less linked to the government, without such a close relationship with the President of the Republic. We want an independent Supreme Court.
