'Pretext for intervention is unacceptable', says Amorim of PCC and CV as terrorists

The chief advisor of the Special Advisory to the Presidency, Celso Amorim, reacted in a note, this Thursday, 28th, to the classification of Comando Vermelho and Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) as terrorist organizations, by the United States. According to Amorim, the White House’s action cannot be a pretext for American intervention in Brazil.

“Public security is a fundamental issue for socioeconomic development. Organized crime is an evil that must be combated. International cooperation is welcome, especially on issues such as money laundering and weapons smuggling. Pretexts for intervention are unacceptable,” said Amorim, in a statement.

This Thursday, United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio reported that the country is designating the First Capital Command (PCC) and the Red Command as terrorist organizations. The decision will come into force on June 5th.

“The Primeiro Comando da Capital and the Comando Vermelho are two of the most violent criminal organizations in Brazil. Their influence extends throughout our region and reaches our country”, wrote Rubio in X this Thursday.

“Today, I have designated these organizations as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists,” he said.

“The Trump administration will continue to use every tool available to protect our national security interests and deny funding and resources to narco-terrorists,” Rubio concluded.

The government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) is against the measure and the president met with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, on the 7th, with the intention of dismantling this and other American measures that would impact Brazil.

This Tuesday, however, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), who is running for President as an opponent of Lula, met with Trump and, according to him, asked the American president to classify the PCC and CV as terrorist organizations. The State Department’s measure comes two days after the meeting.
