PSDB and Cidadania abandon Elmar and announce support for Hugo Motta to command the Chamber

The federation formed by PSDB and Cidadania announced, this Tuesday (5), its support for the candidacy of Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB) to the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies.

Until then, the two parties were part of the support for the deputy’s candidacy. Elmar Nascimento (União Brasil-BA)but decided to break away and embark on the alliance in favor of Motta.

Candidate supported by the President of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL)Motta participated in a series of meetings, this Tuesday, with leaders from the PSDB and Cidadania, as well as other parties.

The parliamentarian should meet, in the next few hours, with the União Brasil bench. To date, Elmar Nascimento has not officially announced his withdrawal from the race for president of the Chamber, but his departure from the race is considered certain.

In addition to Motta and Elmar, the deputy Antonio Brito (PSD-BA) he also places himself as a candidate to succeed Lira.

“We respect the other names, but we use dialogue to have a consensus candidacy. Let’s work on this unique candidacy. We will, throughout the week, look for the PSD and the other parties”, stated Motta.

“We have always argued that we must have a healthy environment in the House. The Chamber cannot be the stage for sad episodes and discussions that do not matter to society. We want a productive debate, not hate or resentment. We will discuss fiscal balance, health, education. We want a management whose dialogue with the other Powers is a hallmark, and not the tension we have today”, added the deputy.

“Good policy”

The act of support by the PSDB/Cidadania federation for Hugo Motta was attended by the federal deputy Aécio Neves (PSDB-MG)one of the main leaders of the tucanato and former president of the Chamber.

“We believe that good politics can be resurrected in Brazil. We can face very difficult times. This construction of yours, which will take you to the presidency of the Chamber, represents good politics”, praised Aécio, addressing Motta.

“I see the rescue of good politics. You will be cotton between crystals, building bridges. We are not just one-off support. You have the support of the PSDB so that the Chamber can reconnect with Brazilian society”, added Aécio.

So far, Hugo Motta already has the support of a bench made up of 341 deputies, which, in theory, should guarantee him a peaceful victory in the election for the presidency of the Chamber, scheduled for February 2025.

To ensure victory in the election, the candidate needs the support of an absolute majority of deputies (257).

In addition to PSDB/Cidadania, the parliamentarian has already received the support of eight other parties: PL, PT, PP, Republicans, MDB, Podemos, PCdoB and PV.

Since 2011 in the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta could become the youngest president of the House – he turned 35 on September 11th. If he wins the election, scheduled for February 2015, Motta would surpass former deputy Luís Eduardo Magalhães (1955-1998), who took command of the Chamber in 1995, at the age of 39.

Motta has always circulated well among different political currents in Brasília and is considered close to all the last presidents of the Chamber: Eduardo Cunha (2015-2016), Rodrigo Maia (2016-2021) and Lira himself (since 2021).

The deputy from Paraíba also has a good relationship with senator Ciro Nogueira (PI), national president of the PP and one of the main leaders of the “centrão” in the National Congress.

In the 2022 elections, when he won his fourth consecutive term in the Chamber, Hugo Motta was the federal deputy with the most votes in Paraíba. The parliamentarian is in his third consecutive year as leader of the Republicans in the House.
