PT criticizes attack on the STF after Toffoli leaves Master case: ‘Authoritarian opportunism’

The PT released a note this Sunday criticizing the “attack” on ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) after Dias Toffoli left the report on the Banco Master case in the Court. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s party stated that it will not “support any authoritarian opportunism”.

In its position, the party says that it has positioned itself in favor of investigations involving the Master, but will not provide support for “pre-trial and lynching of anyone.

“The PT will not join in with any authoritarian opportunism. As much as there is an urgent need for profound reform in Brazilian institutions, electoral political reform, our current model of representative democracy is rotten, there is also an urgent need for reform in the Judiciary, but this need cannot be confused with any organized fascist movement that seeks to weaken the institutions that support the democratic regime”, says the note.

Ministers of the STF defined in a meeting on Thursday night the departure of Dias Toffoli from reporting on the Banco Master case in the Court. A report from the Poder360 website reproduced the full speeches attributed to the ministers during the meeting. As shown by GLOBO, Supreme Court magistrates were outraged by the leak of the meeting. A magistrate even classified the revelation of private conversations as “kid stuff”.

The PT classified the movement of the last few days as an “attack” on the STF.

“We have to investigate all the complaints, but this attack on STF ministers, without the right to defense, weakens the Judiciary, feeds anti-system sentiment, and paves the way to authoritarianism”, he states.

According to members of the STF, there were no assistants or technicians at the meeting, but only the ten members who currently make up the court. Ministers say that the leak worsens the environment of disunity that was already being observed in the Court, with internal distrust and similar to what existed before the pandemic, when magistrates were engaged in public disputes.

This week, the Federal Police delivered to the president of the STF, minister Edson Fachin, an expert report on the cell phone of Daniel Vorcaro, Master’s controller, which allegedly identified mentions of Dias Toffoli’s name in messages found on the device. The information was initially reported by outlets such as UOL and confirmed by GLOBO. After this referral, a request for suspicion against Toffoli was opened in Court.
