PT defends creation of Ministry of Public Security with an eye on 2026
The PT decided, at a meeting of the National Directory this Saturday (06), to maintain its position in defense of the creation of an exclusive ministry of Public Security, separated from the Ministry of Justice.
The topic was the subject of disagreements within the party this week, but, according to PT president, Edinho Silva, there is now a consensual position after the meeting. “This is a consensus position in the party – the importance of creating the Ministry of Public Security. It does not mean that it is a government position”, he stated.
The PT had removed an excerpt from the party’s resolution calling for the creation of this department on Friday (5). This Saturday (6), however, it retreated again.
Two theses
The government leader in the Chamber of Deputies, José Guimarães (PT-CE), said that there are two theses within the party on the topic of public security. “There are two views: one that thinks that the issue of security will have great weight in the election and another view that I think this issue should not be brought into our lap. But I think we need to be as careful as possible with this issue,” he stated.
For Guimarães, who is also president of the PT Electoral Working Group, there would be a positive repercussion if the creation of the Ministry of Public Security was in the government’s program for re-election. “If we indicate in our government program that it will be consolidated now, I think it will have positive repercussions,” he said. “It’s an agenda for 2026.”
When addressing the security crisis, with the advance of criminal factions, the first version of the PT text, obtained by Estadão, presented an excerpt that included the majority of the party’s leadership. “Brazil needs a Ministry of Public Security and an articulated national policy, focusing on intelligence, combating financial havens for organized crime, and protecting communities,” the document said.
Current against division
The head of Justice and Public Security, Ricardo Lewandowski, and the department’s secretaries are against the division of the ministry, on the grounds that it would even weaken the fight against organized crime. In a new configuration, the Federal Police, for example, would no longer be subordinate to the Ministry of Justice.
The National Directory meeting ended this Saturday, the 6th, still awaiting final adjustments to publish the final resolution of the meeting. “There are four texts, they will be combined to make one,” said Edinho Silva.
