Quaest: 49% evaluate as an exaggerated penalty of 27 years in prison imposed on Bolsonaro
GENIAL Survey/Quaest released on Wednesday (17) shows that 49% of Brazilians evaluate the penalty of 27 years and three months imposed on former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) by the Supreme Court (STF). Last week, the first class of the Supreme Court ordered Bolsonaro for the crimes of criminal organization, coup, abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, qualified damage and deterioration of listed heritage. The survey also questioned Brazilians about other restrictive measures imposed on the former president by the Supreme.
According to the survey, 51% considered house arrest, 28% deemed it exaggerated and, 16%, insufficient. Regarding the use of electronic anklet, 48% evaluate the measure as adequate, 35% as exaggerated and 13% as insufficient. The two sanctions were applied by STF Minister Alexandre de Moraes against Bolsonaro before conviction for attempted coup.
In July, Moraes determined the use of electronic anklet and other restrictive measures, such as the ban on access to social networks. The following month, the magistrate decreed house arrest after Bolsonaro violates precautionary measures. At the time, the minister stated that the former president and his son Eduardo Bolsonaro acted to coerce the trial of the coup plot’s criminal action.
The survey also evaluated Brazilians’ opinion on the conviction that made Bolsonaro ineligible: 47% evaluate it as proper, 35% as exaggerated and 12% as insufficient.
Asked about the coup plot, 55% of respondents said there was an attempt to coup d’état to prevent Lula’s inauguration after the 2022 elections. Another 38% deny that an institutional rupture was attempted.
In addition, 54% estimate that the coup attempt was attended by Bolsonaro, while 34% believe he did not play in the coup plot.
The survey interviewed 2,004 people, 16 or older, from September 12 to 14. The margin of error is two percentage points, with 95% confidence level.
